Fireworks Control Zones

Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council would like to consult the community on whether a Fireworks Control Zone (FCZ) would be appropriate for the Shawlands area from mid-October to mid-November 2024.  As a community council we seek to represent the balanced views of the entire community so we have tried to use balanced language.  We recognise that people enjoy fireworks, some are neutral and others dislike them.  We also recognise that problems are caused by a very small minority of people and there could be a perception of cancel culture.

A FCZ prohibits the use of fireworks within the zone area, even on private property.  The community does not have the power to create a FCZ but must apply to Glasgow City Council who will then, following a full public consultation, make the decision.

What do you think local democracy should be about ?

The Scottish Government wants to know how people across Scotland feel about local democracy & how we can have more of a say in civic life.

Read more about that here

Join members of your community councils to talk about how local communities can be more involved in developing and running services in the area.

Use of land to rear Of 24-26 Tassie Street as car park

*Update* this application has been refused.

There is currently an application to use a small piece of land to the rear of Tassie Street, Carment Drive North Lane and Trefoil Avenue as a car park. The access to this is proposed to be from Tassie Street at the East End of Carment Drive North Lane.

Local residents in Carment Drive are united in their opposition to the loss of this informal green space.  A  local Resident from Tassie St has expressed concern about the potential damage to their building which is adjacent to the wall.  Another resident from the Kilmarnock Rd end of the lane, raised a concern about flood risk as there is already an issue with flooding. There are also concern about an incease in traffic and loss of privacy for neighbouring residents.

The reference for the application is 23/02602/PPP and you can view and comment on the application on the Glasgow City Council Planning Portal although we recommend that you email Planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk which is better especially if you have a long comment to make. We have a guide on how to make a planning comment which you may find helpful. The closing date for comments is Monday the 27th November 2023.

We are keen to know your views which we will use to inform our own comment on this application. Please email us – shawlandsstrathbungocc@gmail.com

Shawlands Arcade redevelopment – Phase 1 application approved

At a meeting of the Planning Applications Committee on Tuesday 26th September 2023 Councillors voted by 4 votes to 3 to approve the Phase 1 application which covers the area from Eastwood Avenue up to just before Sainsbury’s ; see the planning application 22/02778/FUL on the online planning portal . You can watch the Committee meeting on the Glasgow City Council webcast pages here

The Community Council had objected to the application mainly on the grounds of Housing tenure, Parking issues and Design & Heritage based on thousands of comments received from the community. You can read our full objection here

Four local Councillors have written a joint letter to the Scottish Government asking them to ‘call in’ the decision since they believe that it didn’t take planning guidance into account properly. We will keep you updated on the response to that.
